For those who don't know it, I have had a sore shoulder for a year now. Either a torn muscle in the deltoid or a strained tendon in the biceps (upper) insertion. I suspect the latter. Anyway, Marian says such a thing will take two years to fully heal. I'm a year in now. One more to go. So, since fighting with a shield I have a tendency to extend my arm in a way that aggravates that injury (possibly slowing the healing process and delaying my return to full functionality) and since NOT practicing drives me nuts, I recently determined that I would fight exclusively with the greatsword, with occasional forays into battleaxe, until the shoulder is fully healed.
I suppose this will be good for me in the long run. (To the extent that a fifty-eight-year-old swordsman has a long run left.) In the short run, I'm getting beat on pretty good. Anyway, tonight's lessons: 1. If you don't rotate far enough in response to a rib-high wrap, you get hit hard on the left triceps and elbow. (Keeping your hands lower when in distance is a good idea, too, it makes it less likely that a wrap will reach the elbow.) B. If you think too much about how clever your footwork is and how you're going to strike her right _there_ and don't keep your eye on her weapon hand, that squire will stab your belly but good. III. Keep your feet moving, cuz half a step back is not enough to save you against Spathae as skillful as they are. d. It is absolutely true that you have to take control of the fight and be aggressive and _master_ the other fighter if you are to win with this weapon.
This requires careful study.
